History of Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club
|
On April 30, 1986, Peggy Johnson and Kennie Starzenski gathered together a group of 15 women to unite and form a club to nourish and encourage a love of quilting. The primary goals were to foster comradeship and education, for each other and for the general public. The original charter members were: Geri Anguli, Margaret Barton, Irene Burfett, Hester Crary, Lee Grau, Shirley Homer, Diana Jay, Peggy Johnson, Eula Kirby, Shirley Lehman, Louise Midkiff, Helen Phifer, Win Skillman, Kennie Starskinski, and Jan Wheeler. In the beginning, meetings were held in homes. As the numbers grew, members met in churches, and finally settled into the Sequim Masonic Hall.
Although the exact date is not documented, it is estimated it was in 1990. From the beginning, members were actively involved with making quilts to give to the community. Originally the quilts were tied. Fire victims, needy residents, and charitable organizations were recipients. As long arming became popular, the club was able to produce more quilts for our community. |
